Elana/Windtree: Invitation to lend $upport

Hi All, I'm forwarding this along to the list. Elena as been a sweet and generous hostess for us, including living our no-one-turned-away-for-lack-of-funds gathering policy by waiving/taking what we could offer for per-person charges when folks were on tight budgets. (As a gathering organizer I try to avoid asking this, but it has happened).

Farmer John: Fire is PAST and OK

Hi All, here's an update from John and Rojelio, (and hugs from me returning from free activist witch camp at wolf creek)

Dear Family and Friends,
After more than a month of anxious days preparing for and watching two
large wildfires approach our farm and neighbors in Carmel Valley (with
time out to have the "flap"  removed from my skull leaving me without
for the next 3-6 months while a replacement is made)I am happy to say
that we are out danger of the "Basin Fire"!  More later.
On the health front the latest MRI revealed no trace of cancer present
and I am finding the chemo less debilitating than it might be.  Rogelio
has managed to keep the garden perfect even through the fire.
I hope you are well and enjoying your summer .
Love,
John (y Rogelio)

John Kinder: Fire Prep Help Desired; John's Chipper

Hi All, John is doing well recovering from his surgery. He's in good spirits, especially given that a piece of his skull is missing (left off for easy access). He and Rojellio continue to rake and otherwise make more space between buildings and burnables.

The fire approaches from two directions. It's still miles away, but clearly-and spectacularly-visible. CDF is letting it burn. 'Could be there in a week, or less...it all depends on the weather.

If you're interested in helping, call John at 831.915.5704.

Let's continue to hold John, Rojellio and the Farm in our prayers.

Farmer John Update from Ross

[ From Ross, John's nephew ]

Hello All,

It's been a while since we've sent out an update, chiefly because there
has been very little news.

John has completed three cycles of his chemotherapy pills (Temodar) and
is tolerating the medicine well.  He had an MRI performed on Monday
which showed no tumor regrowth.  His white blood cell counts are good.

He had a minor outpatient procedure to re-close the persistent infection
around his surgical wound, and that seemed to have done the trick.
However, this week we noticed some problems with the wound which caused
our surgeon to decide that the piece of bone was too infected to save.
Yesterday he had surgery to remove the bone flap.  The surgery went very
well, and John is resting comfortably in the hospital.  He will be
without the bone for a few months and then it will be replaced with an
artificial replacement.

Many may have heard about the Basin Complex fire burning near the farm.
The fire is now just a couple of miles from the farm.  Last week
bulldozers cleared a firebreak just below the farm, and fire fighters
have been working to clear brush and improve the firebreak.  The farm is
well prepared already, and about the only thing left to do is keep our
fingers crossed.

Thank you all for all your continued good wishes and love and support.

-Ross

Farmer John: operation this week & requesting firebreak help

Hi All, the latest from John, yesterday, he will be in surgery sometime this week. He didn't go into details, but was dealing with a staph infection/surgery complication so my guess is that this is the reason for the surgery.

Fire-wise: CDF showed up the other day and did some fire-break creation: however they left without doing any below the cabin, down by the 'long term parking' area and hot tub. That area is too steep for buldozers and must be done by hand. John had thought that they would, but they just left. So he is inviting  folks willing and able to do some hand brush clearing. His tools should be back and fixed by now, so you don't need tools (gloves would be good), but energy.  Last word was that the fire was still several days away.

General help/support still needed as well--cooking and helping out.

John's # is 831-915-5704. Call him, or email jkinder@earthlink.net
Let's hold him in our prayers.

Hugs

Farmer John Fire Update: help still needed with preventititve measures; fire still a couple ridges away.

Subject says it. The fire is still a ridge behind the far ridge you see looking out from the bench at the labrynth. CDF is working on the _bottom_ of the fire, which is at highway one. So far they are only assessing here, but will be starting to bulldoze in the area tommorow. Tasajara has been evacuated of guests. The word is that Tasajara road is controled by the Sherrif at the bottom. Jimber did a bunch of weed whacking and clearing, there is still more to do. (Go Jimber, John says thanks!)

The fire is actually two, coming together.Basin Complex (Gallery and Basin Fires)

John is inviting help, most especially those with weed whackin/chain sawing/brush clearing desire/experience/tools. (He does have a couple of weed whackers and a chain saw). If you're interested, call or email him: JohnKinder@earthlink.net, or 831.915.5704.

The photo below I took last night from the labrynth, with a 200mm lens (moderate telephoto)

Hugs and let's keep John and his land in our prayers and thoughts.

Elena/Windtree says "Thanks"

Hi All, here's the latest update from her...I think most of it you've already seen, but since she asked me to forward...

Dear Kwai,
It is a miracle for sure! The area where we were going to build the Labyrinth in Shekhinah's name and the Peace Pole still stands. No lives were lost in the fire and we are all o.k. Thank you for your concern. Could you please forward this to my Radical Fairy friends. Thanks
Blessings to you,
Elena

Dear friends and family,
Thank you all for your love and support to me and for WindTree in regards to the Summit fire in
the Santa Cruz Mountains. This has been a very difficult time being in the 40 mile winds and
watching WindTree surrounded in flames and knowing many of my nearby neighbors had already lost
their homes. I got the call around 6 a.m. that Maymens Flats was on fire. I went to wake up my
guest in another cabin and led her out towards Watsonville. I needed to get to a neighbor who was
without transportation and phone. Her 6 year old son has asthma and can not be around smoke. We
went back up to WindTree and she got my truck to evacuate her dogs. At around 9 a.m. Janet came
up through Watsonville and found me on the road about 5 miles south of WindTree. She was
determined to get to WindTree for her ATV. So we walked back up into the mountains to get the ATV
out passing fire trucks and blazes along the way. Crazy! When
we got there, fire was flaming up the Goddess trail by the TeePee which was in flames, all around the
Medicine wheel and behind the Critter cabin fire was flooding that canyon space. By this time my
neighbors home to the left and trailers were burnt to the ground. It was all unbelievable. I was in
shock and couldn't think what to grab. Not much time left so we got on the ATV and raced out. Later
we decided to go back up the mountain as my neighbor with the dogs only could get 3 of her 5
animals out. Flying past fire crews and flames jumping the road we made it to their house but the
dogs were too scared and we couldn't get them out from under the house. We had to leave as our hearts
were ponding and flames ripping. By the end of the day I thought that WindTree was burned to the
ground. Again Janet and I decide to go back to WindTree to just see what was up. When I got to the
driveway Boulder Creek fire fighters were stretched out exhausted and Many of the buildings were
still standing! I was in such a state of gratitude for their valiant effort to save the main buildings. Firefighters are the best.
Both my neighbors living to the right had lost everything. It looked like a war zone. Although some of the cabins burned to the ground, it truly is a miracle that much of WindTree is still there.
Although things could change with fire for days, I am even more convinced that WindTree is a holy
sacred place. Thank you again for all your prayers and love. You are powerful and it all has helped.
Love and in gratitude,
Elena

Windtree Update: some building there, some gone; thanks from Elena

Hi All, I'm forwarding this update. Let's continue to hold Elena in our prayers, and look to help we can support her magically, emotionally and logistically during the upcoming period. Remember the Chinese proverb: "Crisis = Opportunity", although this seems not the former.

Hugs

Adding your photos to the Gallery

Hi All, a couple of folks have enquired how to do this. You're all welcome to post photos here: anyone who has been checked off (it's a manual process, by me) as a faerie can do it. (can you say spam?)

Easy, but not particularly intuitive...the price of an understated interface.

Here goes

  • Log in, you'll see your name in the left navigation area.
  • Click on the Gallery link at the top of the page to go to the gallery
    • Click on the right down arrow icon and choose Add Album

  • Fill out the form with Name, title, etc. Note that Name should be lower case letters only, no spaces nor puncutaion.
  • Click the Create button at bottom.
  • When the page refreshes, you'll see Options to the left. It will look like this:
    • Choose Add Items
  • Hee you have several choices.
    • If you're only adding a couple of photos, you can just use the form that's right there.
    • If you want to go ahead and add a bunch, I recommend scrolling the page to the right and choosing Upload Apple
      • You'll get a warning box, see below. Click OK. (I think that this only happens the first time).
      • It will take a few secs.
